2nd prize BIOPOLYMER Award 2022

Innovation:
FUSE HMP-Thermo UD-Tape

SachsenLeinen uses natural fibers and biopolymers to produce UD tapes for lightweight construction. Plastic tapes with unidirectional (UD) aligned fibers are a tried and tested way of specifically reinforcing components in the direction of the forces to be expected in practical use. Instead of reinforcing the walls of components over a large area, components can be made with a minimum of material and weight and comparatively low wall thicknesses - with maximum stability. So far, glass fibers in a polypropylene matrix have been the preferred material combination for this. Unfortunately, there are currently hardly any recycling options for them. With hemp or flax fibers in combination with biodegradable plastics, SachsenLeinen now has a game changer in its portfolio that can be recycled and - if biodegradable plastics are used - composted.

Jury statement

SachsenLeinen’s fiber composite material can be manufactured and processed with established manufacturing technologies. Among other things, the jury was impressed by the evenness with which the fibers are coated with the biopolymer. The development is also a signal for many regions around the world that, like the Central German  lignite mining area, have tackled the transformation from fossil to bio-based raw materials or are planning to do so. In Markkleeberg, natural, regionally growing materials such as hemp or flax are combined with bioplastics to create highly technical products that can be recycled for a second and third life as short-fiber-reinforced plastic. Depending on the used plastic the UD-tapes can be even biologically recycled at the end of their life cycle. An innovation that the jury awards the 2nd Prize to.
